I was in the Navy for 6 years. There is a general impression on society that enlisted people are poor, this is only true because the lifestyle breeds bad spending habits. I remember that in , as a 23 year old E-5, my take home pay was $ every two weeks between base pay, Japan COLA, sea pay, and a housing allowance, most of which was tax free. Not only that, but I was out to sea for more than half of the year, and had zero living expenses during that time. Somehow, after taking home $62k/year after paying taxes, receiving a signing bonus, and not even being able to spend money for half of the year, I managed to spend every last dime. I finished my 6-year enlistment with exactly as much money in my saving account as when I left for boot camp. There is a reason why the phrase “spending like a sailor on liberty” came to be. In the Navy, It only takes a few years to attain a rank where you really don’t have to do much of anything at all at work. I remember showing up on the ship, taking role for all the people who worked for me giving out work assignments, putting someone in charge of making sure everything was getting done, locking myself in my office, and sleeping until 4 O’clock when would walk around to make sure everything had been done for the day, and send everyone home for the night. I hate to talk badly about our military people, and I’d like to say that I was a slacker who slipped through the cracks, but the truth is, I was better than most people. I even received a promotion to E-6 just before getting out after behaving the way I did as an E-5 for two years. It took me a couple years to snap out of my post-Navy funk. I could no longer drink every last dime of my paycheck, and stumble back to the ship for a free warm bed and hot meals until my next paycheck came. Not that it is any excuse, but your husband was conditioned to be the way he is. That is what keeps people in the military, they know they can no longer handle a world where money has to be earned and alcoholism has consequences.
